The Stoic Way

Passage of the day · Wednesday 4 November 2026

Do not seek that the things that happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things that happen to be as they are, and you will flow well.

Epictetus, Enchiridion 8 · modern English rendering · check the source

George Long translation

Seek not that the things which happen should happen as you wish; but wish the things which happen to be as they are, and you will have a tranquil flow of life.

Modern reading

Much of our frustration comes from arguing with what has already happened. Epictetus suggests turning that around: instead of demanding that events fit our wishes, we bring our wishes into line with events. This isn't giving up. It frees up the energy that went into resentment so it can go into the next useful step.

One thing to do today

Name one thing today you keep wishing had gone differently. Say plainly, 'This is how it is,' then decide the next practical step.
