The Stoic Way

About

The Stoic Way (thestoicway.nz) is a New Zealand website by Cam Slater. It is independent and not affiliated with the NZ Stoic Society or the-stoic-way.com.

The Stoic Way shares short passages from two Stoic teachers: Marcus Aurelius, the Roman emperor who kept a private notebook we now call the Meditations, and Epictetus, a former slave who became a teacher, whose talks survive as the Discourses and the Enchiridion (Manual).

Every passage starts from George Long's 19th-century translations, which are in the public domain. We show it in our own modern English rendering, checked against the Greek, and keep Long's original wording alongside. Each passage carries its book and section so you can read it in context.

The modern reading under each passage is ours. It's labelled as such, and it never puts words in the author's mouth.

The Stoic Way doesn't publish from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.

It isn't therapy. If you're struggling, please talk to someone: in New Zealand call or text 1737; in Australia call Lifeline on 13 11 14.
